53 Finance Monthly Global Awards 2019 www.finance-monthly.com USA RENEWABLE ENERGY ADVISER OF THE YEAR ABOUT MICHAEL GRAINEY Michael Grainey, the Principal of the firm, has more than thirty years of experience in senior management positions on energy policy with federal and state agencies. Mr. Grainey was Director of the Oregon Department of Energy, a Cabinet agency with a budget of over $250 million per biennium, from 2002 to 2009 and Deputy Director the previous twenty years. He advised four Governors on energy policy. He was Renewable Energy Advisor at the Oregon Business Development from 2009 to 2014, when he retired from the State of Oregon and founded his consulting firm. He has a Juris Doctor Degree from New York University Law School and an undergraduate degree from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. Mr. Grainey is also an Advisory Council Member for the Gerson Lehrman Group (GLG). In that role he is available to provide advice to investment clients of GLG on a wide variety of potential energy investments, including energy efficiency, renewable energy and traditional forms of energy. Mr. Grainey has also worked on Climate Change issues as a member of the Oregon State Bar’s Sustainable Future Section, where he serves on the Section’s Executive Committee and on its Climate Change Committee. He has also been one of the organizers for the last two annual Call to the Bar Conferences of Lawyers Committed to Addressing the Climate Emergency. He spoke at the national conference in April 2018 in Washington, DC on the State of Oregon’s actions to address Climate Change. He has been asked to speak at a follow up program later in July to the conference held in April of 2019. Mr. Grainey has spoken at many conferences on energy policy throughout his career. Most recently, in addition to speaking on Climate Change in Washington DC last year, he also spoke in May 2019 on hydrogen and fuel cell electric vehicles at the Green Transportation Summit & Expo held in Tacoma, Washington. Mr. Grainey has also published numerous papers in law reviews and in annual conference proceedings of renewable energy organizations. His most recent papers have dealt with the great disparity in federal financial support for fossil and nuclear energy compared to the diminishing federal support for renewable energy and energy efficiency. One of these papers was published as part of the 42nd Geothermal Resources Council Annual Meeting held in October 2018 in Reno, Nevada. An updated paper reflecting the latest federal budget reductions has been accepted for publication for the upcoming HydroVision International annual conference in Portland, Oregon in late July of this year, where Mr. Grainey will again be speaking FIRM PROFILE Michael W. Grainey Consulting LLC is a sole proprietorship helping organizations address energy issues and energy policies. A special focus of the firm is renewable energy and energy efficiency. The firm provides advice and consulting services on project finance and development for renewable energy and energy efficiency projects. Consulting services have been provided on various renewable energy technologies, including solar, geothermal, biomass, energy storage and hydroelectric projects. Services provided have included assistance on fundraising capital, development of strategic and business plans for project development, review of utility least cost plans and review of other federal and state regulatory requirements.
